The Landing: Interview with Chen Chen at Up the Staircase Quarterly

The Landing: An Interview Series seeks to gain insight into the diverse creative processes of some of our favorite writers with the hopes that we can inspire others through this sharing. Each quarter we will highlight one previously published poem in a short interview.

Chen Chen

Chen Chen’s poem, “The Sea is a Secret Net for the Bogeyman’s Feelings,” was published late last year at Leopardskin & Limes.

The sky is a hidden pocket for the bogeyman’s
philosophy. The early morning glow is the bogeyman
in drag. The bogeyman’s greatest regret is
on a boat, anaconda-long & ancient. The bogeyman has
retired from being your childhood fear, & this
makes him happy….

Chen discusses casting his bogeyman to be “somewhere between brunch guest and fantastical creature,” writing with tenderness, and advice on creating poetry with dissonance in unexpected places. Read our interview here.
